(Bill) Hashizume published his translation of Yatsuro Yamaga’s History of Haney Nokia (farmers association) he used municipal tax assessment rolls and information gathered by John Mark Read for his 1971 MA Thesis as the basis for a map showing the properties once owned by Japanese settlers. As the One Book Whonnock project spearheaded by Jean Davidson and Sue Adair progresses it is becoming evident that most of the participants are not aware that in pre-war years Japanese men, women, and children formed a major part of the population of Whonnock and Ruskin. Fraser Valley Rhododendron Society

At an extraordinary meeting held this evening the members of the Fraser Valley Rhododendron Society decided to dissolve.
Their lasting creations is the Rhododendron Garden at Whonnock Lake Centre (2000). The garden is maintained by volunteers with support of the Whonnock Community Association.
Scott Henney, recognized earlier this year as Volunteer of the Year by the Whonnock Community Association for his tireless work on the garden, remains chair of the Whonnock Lake Rhododendron Committee. Phone 604-464-7979

Lost Basset Hound...Came home after three days

Brew is a 14 year old basset hound who recently suffered a stroke. One of his back legs drag, but if on solid ground he is able to motor along nicely on 3 legs. Yesterday at about 4:00pm he was on a lead in the back yard, basking in the sun. He managed to escape his collar and must have made his way towards Whonnock Lake, off 112th Ave. in Maple Ridge. Many people have searched, hopefully the only plausible explanation for not finding him by now is that someone picked him up, and because he drags a back leg, thought he had been hit by a car and took him home? to a vet? The Maple Ridge SPCA and the Mission pound have alerts posted for him, but so far, nothing ........... anyone with info? We miss him and are afraid for him.

Update 21 October--After three days on three legs, brew has returned. thanks for everything.

There was a need for a foot bridge for walkers and runners across over a brook, a tributary to Kaka Creek, at the bottom of Ferguson Avenue at 112th Avenue.
This summer Dave Stevenson organized a few locals to build that bridge. He designed the bridge and got it approved by Metro Vancouver Parks. Dave contributed the railing, Bruce the I beams and Mr. O'Garra the planks. Other people contributed also. "It is a great feeling," reported Fred Volglmaier, "to have the community come together and get things done."

Trudy and Steve put a new roof of barn shakes on the historic Byrnes house where they live, next to the post office. They keep the house and garden in mint condition! Neighbour Reg, who did this excellent job, is certain the roof will last for 50 years.

Whonnock Weavers and Spinners 31st Annual Show and Sale on Sunday November 27 from 11 AM to 4 PM at Whonnock Lake Centre.

This very popular sale will feature weaving, spinning, knitting, felting and basketry. As well, there will be several guest artists with pottery, glass, baskets, ironwork, woodwork and the always in demand teddy bears.

Admission is free, there will be a free door prize draw, and coffee and tea by donation. This is a great place to do your Christmas shopping.

It all started out VERY wet but by noon the rain stopped, the sky cleared, and we even saw some sunny spots!
Thanks in particular to Yukiko (on photo with green umbrella) who revived the historic event for this year and tirelessly worked to make sure that everything went as it should. Thanks to also Sue, members of the executive of the Whonnock Community Association, the management of Whonnock Lake Centre and other volunteers.

Not sunny but at least dry with cars parked all along 113th Avenue. Many, many children enjoying the free easter egg hunt offered annually by the Whonnock Community Association. Thanks to organizers Yukiko, Sandra, Sheryl, Shirley and the other volunteers who gave their time to make this happen. A special thanks also to Rick (the Easter Bunny). The picture shows Sandra with her glorious Easter Bonnet at the table with the special surprises handed out to kids finding something else that just poker chips. Whonnock's Post Office 125 years

On 1 August 1885 Noble Oliver became the first of a continuous line of a dozen or so Whonnock postmasters. He had come to Whonnock all the way from Ontario, and in 1884 he opened a general store “adjoining Whonnock station.” In the fall of that year the Post Office Inspector recommended to the Postmaster General in Ottawa that a post office be established in Oliver’s store for the growing community and its surroundings including the settlers across the Fraser River and in the Stave River area. The Post Office Inspector thought that the post office could be “…served with mail from the railway from once to three times a week as may be found most convenient.”

Today Sue Schulze is our postmaster and on Friday 30 July between 10:00 and 2:00 she would like to celebrate this 125th birthday with everyone who loves the Whonnock Post office. Be there!! It will be quite a party.

Easter Egg Hunt 2010

The Easter Egg Hunt of the Whonnock Community Association was a great success. Hundreds of kids and as many parents and grandparents came to the event, enjoying the lovely sunshine. Over 8,000 (eight-thousand!!) chocolate eggs were given away--we really scraped the bottom! CLICK HERE to look at the pictures!

WCA Volunteer Dinner 21 March 2010

What a pleasure it was for all of us to meet so many old and new friends with plenty of time to visit and chat, eat and drink together. Lavalight provided a wonderful musical background. Melanie Snell (with a fond memory of Norm Billesberger) received the Volunteer of the Year 2010 award for dedicated work keeping the finances of the Whonnock Community Association in good order for many years. Yes, its her on the photo--click on it to have a closer look. Noreen Wood's hard work taking over that task was also recognized. Margaret Norman donated a gavel to the WCA to replace the stone used by the president Brad Jennings. Phil Johnson recognized 35 years of service to the community by retiring firefighter Trevor Taylor, the first recipient of the Volunteer of the Year reward back in 2005.

Parks Master Plan

The Department of Parks and Leisure Services will present its new

Parks Master Plan, created to set the direction over the next ten years,

in a public meeting on Tuesday, February 9, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Whonnock Elementary School (27471 - 112^th Avenue).

The meeting will begin with a PowerPoint presentation at 7:00 p.m. Discussion to follow, with opportunity for public input.

Power Strike Damage

More than a hundred people attended last Thursdays meeting discussing the options to extract restitution from BC Hydro for the damage done to their properties due to a power spike or spikes in the night of November 17th. The "Old Whonnock Elementary School"

I saw the Whonnock Community website and saw your newsletter, so thought I'd drop a line. I'm not sure if you're aware but the old Dowco building, a.k.a. the old Whonnock Elementary School, was sold last November.

I'm the new owner. Several groups meet at the building now, so I thought I'd let you know about them:

Thornhill Montessori is still there and hoping to expand to two classrooms.

RCKC still meets there - I've given them a full classroom for all their workout equipment and access to the gymnasium, to use gratis until I rent out the space to someone else or they complete their new building whichever comes first.

HyperStealth: A private company leases one room. The owner is Guy Cramer at gcramer@hyperstealth.com. Guy is a fascinating character - I think the people of Whonnock/Ruskin would find what he does quite fascinating (designs camouflage for countries around the world).

Albion Fellowship Church: This is a church of about 130 people from all over ThornHill, Albion, Webster's Corners, Whonnock, Ruskin, etc... a few from the rest of MR, and A few come from as far as Mission and Abbotsford and one or two even come from Pitt Meadows. It's also the church I attend. We used to meet at Albion Hall - hence the name. We'll also likely be changing the name some time in the next few months to reflect the change of venue. Dan Ost, who is also the firehall chaplain, is the pastor. He can be reached at dost@albionfellowship.org. The church is VERY community-minded, willing to open doors for community needs and quite involved in putting on youth activities in the community.

Maple Ridge Modern Pentathlon Association: This group went into mothballs about 1 1/2 years ago, as did all of BC Pentathlon. It was resurrected a few weeks ago by me (I'm the acting president until we actually form a board) and is currently the only active pentathlon club in British Columbia. Athletes at all levels participate in epee fencing and competitive air pistol shooting at the school. We are coached by Bob Noble, Pentathlon Canada's high performance director and perennial master's champion. With three nationally ranked age-division gold medalists, we develop athletes from grass-roots beginners through to the international level of competition with high standards in coaching and safety. Our youngest athlete currently is 7 years old, our oldest 54. Entry to the sport is only $20 annually which is all-inclusive for registration and insurance, facility use, coaching, all basic fencing equipment and use of entry-level competitive air pistols.

Farewell & Welcome

Rev. David Findley-Price retires January 31 after 10 years as priest at The Anglican Church of the Holy Spirit on 272nd in Whonnock.

He has had a significant ministry there. We want to make sure anyone whose life has been touched by his ministry is aware that his last Sunday service will be January 31 at 10 a.m. They would be welcome to join us. We'd love to send him off with a full house, and hope you could post this on the website.

The next Sunday, February 7 at 10 a.m., we will welcome the interim priest, Rev. Marnie Peterson, and we certainly invite the neighbourhood to come and meet her then.

There will be a social time following each of these services.

Dowco leaving Whonnock

The Dowco office building at the corner 272nd and 100th shows a "For Sale" sign. Ewen Dobbie, president of Dowco Consultants Ltd. kindly sent us the following note to explain why Dowco is leaving Whonnock.

As you may recall, we have three offices in the lower mainland. With the new Golden Ears Bridge opening it now make sense for us to consolidate our offices. To this end, we have transferred most of the Whonnock office staff to our Surrey/Langley office. A few staff have decided to relocate back to the Burnaby office.
The building is for sale, but we will still be permitting the free use of the gymnasium.

Dowco has been a wonderful corporate neighbour and volunteer right from the moment they opened their Whonnock office in the old school building. Making the gymnasium in their building available to the community is one example. Less known is that they hosted the Whonnock & Ruskin Website at no cost to us for many years and made sure that successors continued that courtesy.

Whonnock United Church

In the face of a dwindling congregation religiuos services in Whonnock's United Church have been suspended and the 1914 building and the adjacent community house are now up for sale. A sad moment for all who cherish memories of this important feature in the Whonnock landscape.

Bums on Allan's Bench.

As reported in May, one of the benches in the Rhododendron Garden carries Allan Springman's name. Neva Springman discovered the entry and took the trouble to send the following comment:

I am very touched by the kindness of the Whonnock Community Association and Phil Johnson in particular for providing this memorial bench. I know that it would please Allan greatly - though I suspect he would have some flip comment regarding the Whonnockian bums that might grace his bench.

Dogs are allowed in Whonnock Lake Park but ...

Happy to report that the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Parks Department has replaced the old signs at Whonnock Lake: "No dogs allowed in park area" with new signs reading "No dogs permitted on beach or lawn areas." Everywhere else in the park dogs on leash are permitted.

Thanks to the staff at the Parks Department for their prompt action to produce the new signs and replace the old ones!

These old "No Dogs Allowed in Park Area" signs are interpreted by some to say that no dogs are allowed Whonnock Lake Park, but that is not correct--they are not allowed in some areas of the park.

We understand that Parks and Leisure will replaced the signs by the middle of July with signs reading: "No dogs permitted on beach & lawn areas."

Note that dogs should be kept on the leash at all times in areas where they are allowed.

Wish Trail Ride 2009

The Wish Trail Ride held on Sunday 7th June was a great success. Pledges were collected by all riders and the proceeds all went to the Children's Wish Foundation. The approximately two-hour ride started and ended at the Popadiuk's. Thank you to all riders, their horses, and the volunteers and in particular Sue Schulze and Dina Popadiuk! Allan Springman Remembered

Bobskoot, who lives in Vancouver, has an interest in photography and introduces himself with the following words:

an avid motorcycle rider for many years during the mid 60's to early 80's. after an absence of nearly 20 years, recently re-entered the 2 wheeled world of scootering. i like to enjoy the scenery, the smell of flowers and taking the road less travelled; the back roads of British Columbia, and the Pacific Northwest with a camera by my side to capture memories of a lifetime. The adventure is the journey, may you never reach your destination.

Sunday 12 April: Easter Egg Hunt Whonnock Lake Centre

It was perhaps the wettest Easter Egg hunt but still some 50-60 kids and their parents braved the elemements for a good time and a claw-full (and more) chocolate eggs--courtesy of the Whonnock Community Association! Hot cocoa is always served!
Those who found the magic eggs and won a basket full of easter goodies were Angelina (under 4), Emily (5-7) and Taylor (8-10).
